What to Expect After Your Shipment Arrives at Port
From off-loading at the port to final delivery at your home, the import delivery process involves precise coordination and timing. Here’s how it works — and how NM Europe ensures that everything runs smoothly, even when last-minute changes arise.
Arrival & Off-loading
Once your container ship arrives, off-loading typically takes 1 to 3 days.
Why the delay? Large container vessels carry 10,000+ containers and unloading is a major operation.
Only after off-loading is complete can customs clearance begin.
Understanding ‘Free Time’
The container used for your shipment remains the property of the shipping line. They offer a limited period of “free time” — the window in which the container must be returned empty, without incurring extra charges.
-
Typical free time: 4–5 days
-
Starts: As soon as the container reaches the port
-
Includes: Weekends
-
Risk: Exceeding the deadline means demurrage (container retention charges)
Why Availability Is Crucial
To avoid delays and additional fees, we must complete delivery within this short timeframe. That’s why it’s important that you:
-
Remain reachable around the ETA
-
Are prepared to accept delivery on short notice
-
Notify us in advance of any issues with access or timing
Coordinating Delivery Logistics
Unlike domestic moves, international shipping involves two teams:
-
A transporter who hauls the container to your new home
-
A delivery crew that unloads and sets up your belongings
Both must be scheduled simultaneously, which is why NM Europe plans ahead carefully to minimize your costs and reduce disruption.
About Your Estimated Arrival Date
The ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) from the shipping line is only an estimate.
We can’t confirm an exact delivery date until:
- The vessel physically reaches port
- The container is off-loaded
- Customs formalities are complete
We’ll give you a provisional date early on and confirm as soon as we’re able.
Important: Missed Deliveries & Charges
NM Europe will make every effort to schedule your delivery within the free time, based on crew and transporter availability.
However, if you’re unable to accept delivery on the proposed date:
-
You may be responsible for container retention charges
-
You may incur port storage fees
-
The next delivery slot could be several days later, especially for rural areas
⚠️ Note: Due to heavy-goods vehicle regulations in France, deliveries cannot take place on weekends.
