Customs Clearance: What to Expect During Your Move
OUR ROLE IN THE CUSTOMS PROCEDURE
While NM Europe prepares documentation carefully and guides you through the process from the outset, customs clearance is not always a fixed or predictable step. Additional requests can occasionally arise at short notice, particularly around the time your goods arrive in the destination country.
How Customs Clearance Works
Customs clearance is carried out by the relevant authorities and is a mandatory part of importing household goods into France.
Even when documentation has been submitted and accepted in advance, customs may carry out further checks during transit or on arrival. These checks form part of normal border controls and apply to all international shipments.
Why Additional Requests Can Arise
Customs clearance is not always completed in a single step. In some cases, authorities may request additional confirmation or clarification after reviewing the shipment in more detail.
These requests can arise:
-
Once the shipment is in transit
-
Upon arrival in France
-
As part of a random or targeted inspection
Unfortunately, these requests cannot always be anticipated in advance and are outside our control.
Why Your Availability Matters
Customs requests are often time-sensitive. For this reason, it is important that clients remain reachable and available around the estimated time of arrival of their shipment.
Prompt responses help to:
-
Avoid customs holds
-
Prevent delivery delays
-
Reduce the risk of additional storage or handling charges
In many cases, documents are required to be printed, signed and scanned, to allow the process to continue without disruption.
