arrival
The first step in the import delivery process is the off-loading of your container and this can take 1-3 days bacause there could be more than 10,000 containers on a container carrier. Once this is done, the customs clearance process can begin
free time
The container your goods are transported in remains the property of the shipping line and only a limited amount of ‘free time’ is included in the freight cost which means that if the container is not returned empty to the port in the allotted time, additional fees will apply (These fees are known as demurrage charges)
how many days?
The amount of free time varies slightly for each shipping line but generally it is 4 to 5 days and starts from the moment the container arrives at the port and includes Saturday and Sunday. This allows just enough time to off-load the container, carry out customs formalities then deliver to you so that the container can be returned empty.

Delivery
Process
transport
We do not have access to an unlimited amount of transport options and available delivery crews, so it is important that you remain available to take delivery for the entire period around the estimated time of arrival (keeping in mind that the ETA can change at the last minute)
delivery
Since the delivery involves not only arranging for a transporter to haul the container from the port but also organising a separate delivery crew to carry out the unloading at your residence, we must put everything in place ahead of time to complete the process within the above-mentioned free time and therefore avoid you incurring additional charges
ETA
The estimated time of arrival (ETA) provided by the shipping line is only an indication of the arrival date and until the container vessel actually arrives at the port, we can only anticipate and make provisional arrangements for delivery
Important
NM Europe will offer you a delivery date within the free time based on the availability of both transporter and crew but if you are unable to take delivery on that date you would be responsible for any ensuing container retention charges and port storage fees. It is important to understand that the next available delivery solution could be several days later – especially if you are in a remote area of France.
Please note that due to restrictions placed on heavy goods vehicles in France, it is not possible to carry out deliveries at the weekend.
